Dock in Absolute is made up of 3 professionnal musicians having studied at the Berklee College of Music Boston, Codarts University of Arts Rotterdam, Hochschule für Musik Saarbrücken, including Tim Lin (percussion), David Kintziger (E Bass) and Jean-Philippe Koch (piano and composition). With a shared love of jazz, they combine different styles of progressive Jazz, classical and rock, playing the pianist’s own compositions and co-created their unique jazz style in 2012.  The trio presented its music to many Festivals and venues including the Hong Kong International Jazz Festival, Beishan International Jazz Festival, Yokohama Jazz Promenade Festival, Brussels Jazz Marathon, Sibiu Jazz Festival, Jazzit Fest Torino, Paris Jazz Festival à la Cité, Ploiesti Hot Jazz Summit, Shenzhen Fringe Festival,  Blues’n Jazz Rallye Luxembourg, Blues Express, Berlin B Flat, Luxembourg Jazz Meeting, Shanghai Jay Z,  Milan, Berlin, Liège, Guangzhou, Hong Kong… Dock In Absolute also brings his new album out in May, recorded at the Bauer Studios, under the Label CAM JAZZ.

Their fresh approach to jazz allowed them to push boundaries, and to explore the potential of new unique wave of sounds while adding strength to the jazz field.

Jean-Philippe Koch (Piano, Composition)

Jean-Philippe Koch started learning the piano at the age of five and went on to study at the Luxembourg Conservatoire. At the age of 17, he continued at the Musikhochschule in Saarbrücken, and completed a Master’s degree course at the Liège Royal Conservatoire, where he graduated with ‘grande distinction’ and also won the prize for the highest mark in his Master’s course. Having also studied in Berklee College of Music in Boston, he has been awarded a scholarship by Berklee school for his studies.

Always on the lookout for new approaches to piano, Jean-Philippe has attended master classes given by L. Boulet, P. L. Aimard, K. Stott, D. Protopopescu, C. Fontlupt, J. Longrée-Poumay, T. Duis, S. Demay and others. Alongside this, he obtained Baccalaureates in musical notation and musical analysis. Prior to that, he studied composition and musical notation at the Luxembourg Conservatoire. In 2014, he joined the teaching staff of this school as a piano teacher.

Jean-Philippe also has a keen interest in improvisation, jazz and composing, performing both alone and as part of a group. He studied jazz piano at the Berklee College of Music in Boston and at the Codarts University Worldmusic and Dance Center in Rotterdam. With the Jazz band Dock In Absolute made up of Michel Meis (percussion) and David Kintziger (double bass), he is travelling around the world to present its music including China, Japan, Luxembourg, Belgium, Germany, Romania, Netherlands…

Jean-Philippe has recorded four Cds, the last one under the label EtCetera, with his father, Philippe (violin), and his sister, Laurence (violin), as part of the Koch Trio. This CD has been nominated at the ‘International Classic Music Awards’ 2016. The Trio played inter alia at the Berliner Philharmonie, Luxembourg Philharmonie, Christophori Salon in Berlin, Paris Goethe Institut, London Conway Hall, Dublin, Madrid Conde Duque… and continues to present its music to the world.

Jean-Philippe has been named ‘Export Artist of the Year’ by music:LX  with the Trio Koch.

Jean-Philippe was awarded the gold medal, with a special commendation from the panel of judges, at the UGDA International Young Soloists Competition in Luxembourg. In the same year, he was also awarded the SACEM Prize, the EMCY (European Union of Music Competitions for Youth) Prize and the prize for the best composition for piano at the Artistes en Herbe international composition competition.

DAVID KINTZIGER (E-Bass)

After training as a visual artist, musician and teacher, David decided to devote his time to performing and to teaching the arts in multidisciplinary, intergenerational workshops.

David is a multi-talented, creative artist and a musician who loves a challenge. This double bassist, guitarist, leader of instrumental ensembles and designer of improvised string instruments is always on the lookout for new experiences. In 2006, with pianist Baptiste Vaes, he came third in the Strade del cinema international silent film mustic festival in Aosta, and has gone from strength to strength since then.

David, a leading figure on the Belgian and international jazz-rock scenes and a lover of jam sessions, is also a dancer and an actor-composer. Besides, he’s part of various musical projects like Val et les bateleurs (french song), or CYCLO (Cinematic and world Jazz music), among others.

Having studied classical music at the André Modeste Grétry Academy, David went on to study jazz at the Marcel Désiron d’Amay Academy, alongside famous musicians such as Fabien Degryse, Erwin Vann, Nicolqs Thys, André Klenes and Philippe Doyen. He then went to the Liège Royal Conservatoire, where, among other things, he specialised in improvised music under Garrett List and melodic rhythm in chamber rock under Michel Massot.

Tim Lin大包 (Drums)

Drummer Tim Lin is a regular participant at the Festival, as well as a regular performer at other renowned live jazz venues around Taiwan. He was awarded the Best Newcomer along with the band “Blueberry Jazz Pie” in 2010 Taichung Jazz Festival and in 2016 Taipei Jazz Festival. In 2015, Tim was also selected as one of the elite Musicians at the Taipei Jazz Festival Elite Jazz Camp and subsequently performed at the Festival. With passion and eagerness to expand his expertise in drums, Tim has also participated in theatre and musical productions.
