New York & Tokyo Jazz Connection will be performing selections from the standard Jazz song book as well as original songs dedicated to the city of Taipei.

Tomoko Ohno, born in Tokyo, began piano studies at the age of 4.  As a teenager, she began playing professionally in the Tokyo area jazz scene.  After graduating from Rikkyo University in Law and Politics, Miss Ohno moved to the United States and entered the Jazz Studies Program at William Paterson University in New Jersey, where she studied with Harold Mabern and  Rufus Reid.  During this time she had the opportunity to perform with such artists as Jerome Richardson, Wynton Marsalis, Benny Golson and Joe Henderson.  A recipient of the Student Award of Outstanding Performance and a member of the Dean’s List, Miss Ohno graduated with a B.A. in Jazz Studies.

She has performed at Lincoln Center, Weill Recital Hall of Carnegie Hall, The Blue Note, Sweet Basil and The Lenox Lounge in Harlem, in addition to appearing on live radio broadcasts by WBGO and WNYC, and ABC TV’s Good Morning America.  She has performed and/or recorded with Slide Hampton, Claudio Roditi, James Spaulding, Rufus Reid, The John Lee Quartet, The Dizzy Gillespie Alumni Big Band and Sherry Maricle and the Diva Jazz Orchestra, as well as working as a side musician with such diverse musical ensembles as the Harlem Spiritual Ensemble and The Spirit of Life Ensemble.

Miss Ohno also leads her own group, and has released three CDs on the Japan-based Tokuma label.  In 1997 her first album, “Powder Blue” was released, and in 1999 her second album, “Affirmation” was released, followed in 2000 by the album “Natural Woman.”  Her album “Shadows of Spring” (recorded in Argentina) was released by MDR Records in 2005. Her latest album “Tomoko Ohno in Buenos Aires” was also released by MDR Records in 2007. Miss Ohno released “From Tokio to Buenos Aires TOMOKO OHNO & RICARDO LEW” in 2011, ” Tres Sabores” in 2016. Miss Ohno and legendary bassist Jay Leonhart released their duo album ” Don’t You Wish” in 2017.

Miss Ohno is also active as a composer, and has been the recipient of a grant from The Meet The Composer Foundation.  Commissioned works include pieces written for the Englewinds Chamber Ensemble.

Vincent Hsu is a jazz bassist and composer. Born in Changhua, Taiwan, and raised in Kaohsiung, he launched his musical career in New York City, where he lived for eight years. His debut album, Homeland, won Best Jazz Album at the 2014 Golden Indie Music Awards and was nominated for three Golden Melody Awards in 2015: Best Album, Best Composer, and Best Producer (Instrumental). Starting from 2018, He will host a new radio show “Jazz Supreme” at Bravo FM 91.3.

Hsu was awarded a master’s degree in Jazz Performance from New York University and a bachelor’s degree in Jazz Performance from City College of New York, where he previously earned a master’s degree in TESOL. He studied acoustic bass with legendary musicians, including Cecil McBee, Victor Venegas, Andy González, and John Schaeffer (former Principal Bassist for the New York Philharmonic). His musical styles cross between jazz and Afro-Cuban music.

Shuntaro Harada,  born in Tokyo.  Shuntaro Harada studied Japanese literature at Meiji University. He began his musical career while attending the university. His debut as a member of the jazz fusion group “SQUARE” brought him major recognition in Japan. He was also a regular band member on the first Japanese late night TV show  “11 PM” for 5 years.

Shuntaro Harada continues his work as a producer, and is well known for his versatility in a wide range of musical styles as a drummer.

Shuntaro’s grandfather was the legendary jazz drummer Jimmy Harada, who was a first generation Japanese of British descent. Shuntaro’s father, Isamu Harada , is also a well known jazz drummer.
