This is a powerful, international 7-piece Soul Jazz powerhouse based in Taipei, guaranteed to bring the heat to the Taichung Jazz Festival. Their sound is deeply dedicated to the Blues and Gospel tradition, but it is constantly infused with the sophistication and improvisational language of the modern jazz world. The diversity and professional calibre of the individual musicians in this group is remarkable and the result is a sound that keeps the listener on their toes from the first ringing organ chord to the final, soulful guitar bend.

Canadian guitarist Ben Holt effortlessly transports listeners from Taiwan to the American South, where he cut his teeth on the local scene as a young guitarist. He received his master’s degree from the University of North Texas, and his professional credits include college-level teaching, Musical Director at the Cross Church Denton, and a “Best Jazz Group” nomination at the Dallas Observer Music Awards. Since becoming a resident in Taiwan, he has appeared alongside ?te Whyte (壞特), the Taiwan Symphony Orchestra (TSO), and has continued to tour with various bands across Asia and Europe.

The group’s US American keyboardist, Kris Oprisch, is fluent in church music, gospel, and classical music. His expertise in live music technology enables him to craft sounds that span and transcend traditional musical genres. He is also featured as a vocalist on select songs, at times channeling the raw energy of the great Soul icon Ray Charles, adding yet another level of versatility to this unique band.

With three prominently featured horns, each song is an adventure in sound. This hard-blowing trio consists of none other than Taiwanese trumpeter Luo Dan (羅丹) , a graduate from the Royal Conservatory of Music in Brussels; German-born and New York City-bred Jonas Ganzemüller on the saxophone; and trombonist Nicolas Rusillon from Switzerland, who by day performs with the Taiwan Philharmonic (NSO), and by night is known for releasing powerful, growling jazz sounds. Their contribution ranges from meticulously arranged backing textures and hard-hitting shout choruses to high-intensity solos.

The rhythm section is tightly locked down by Hans Lin (林加恩), a highly sought after young drum talent in Taiwan’s jazz scene and bassist Derrick Lin (林克安), a household name not only in jazz circles but also in Taiwan’s pop music scene, having worked with major artists like anpu (安溥), Gary Chaw (曹格), and Richie Jen (任賢齊).

The Soul Imposters are as musically and geographically diverse as you can imagine, yet they are focused on one mission: to deliver the authentic, electrifying sound of Soul and Blues to Taichung.
