If music can preserve memory, then every song is a historical document, carrying the voices and lived experiences of its time.
In this performance, jazz becomes a way to revisit songs that have carried stories of everyday life, cultural identity, oppression, and the pursuit of freedom. From Taiwanese songs such as Thinn Oo-oo (天黑黑), Sio Bah-tsàng (燒肉粽), Hông-hun ê Kòo-hiong (黃昏的故鄉), and Formosa (美麗島), to works rooted in African American history and culture, including Strange Fruit, Work Song, Mississippi Goddam, and Four women, the program explores how people across different generations and societies have used music to express their experiences, preserve their cultures, and defend their dignity.
Approximately half of the program will be dedicated to historical storytelling, discussions of human rights, and introductions to the songs. Alongside live jazz performances, we will explore the historical circumstances behind these works, the social and political environments in which they emerged, and their connections to questions of identity, culture, and human rights.
(𝗦𝗽𝗼𝗸𝗲𝗻 𝗽𝗿𝗲𝘀𝗲𝗻𝘁𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝘀 𝘄𝗶𝗹𝗹 𝗯𝗲 𝗰𝗼𝗻𝗱𝘂𝗰𝘁𝗲𝗱 𝗶𝗻 𝗠𝗮𝗻𝗱𝗮𝗿𝗶𝗻.)
Born from African American musical traditions, jazz carries a rich history of improvisation, dialogue, and creative expression. Through new arrangements and live interpretation, this performance brings together the memories of Taiwan’s land and democratic struggles with the historical experiences of African Americans, allowing these different stories to meet on the same stage.
How do we remember history? What does freedom mean to us today? And how have people used music to preserve stories that were once suppressed, silenced, or forgotten?
Join us for an evening of music and historical storytelling, as we revisit these songs and reflect on the continuing significance of memory, freedom, and human rights.
