Alan Kwan / Patrick Lui Quartet

Alan Kwan, a Hong Kong guitarists living in New York , is bringing his compositions on sappho stage, along with pianist Patrick who ‘s also from Hong Kong

Kwan was born in Hong Kong and started playing guitar at the age of 14; after 4 years of musical training, he decided to devote himself to jazz. He studied with Ted Lo and Eugene Pao and started performing in Hong Kong. Within a few years, he became one of the most active jazz musicians in the city.

In 2009, he moved to the United States to further pursue his study in music. He has studied with Fred Hamilton, Richard McClure, and Noel Johnston at the University of North Texas, where he was the recipient of the College of Music Scholarship, Kris Kolflat Scholarship, and Academic Scholarship. He also studied privately with David Berkman, Paul Bollenback, Stefan Karlsson, Quamon Fowler, Rodney Jones, Nir Felder, Ben Monder, Mike Moreno, Bruce Saunders, John Stowell, Clint Strong, and many other renowned musicians.

Kwan has performed in Hong Kong, Dallas, New York, and Tokyo with various jazz musicians including Dayna Stephens, Fabian Almazan, Paul Bollenback, Orlando Le Fleming, Sean Wayland, David Smith, George Delancey, Curtis Graham Nowosad. He also performed for the Hong Kong Economic and Trade Office in New York (HKETONY) and the Chief Secretary for Administration of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region (HKSAR), Carrie Lam. In the summer of 2016, Kwan was invited to teach master classes and perform at the Kos Swing Big Band in Taiwan under the direction of Grammy nominee Dr. Gene Aitken. Kwan was a semi-finalist of the 2016 and 2017 International Songwriting Competition.

Patrick Lui 

Upon graduating from Berklee College of Music (USA), Patrick returned to his hometown Hong Kong and began his career as an all-round musician and has enjoyed success in different fields of the music industry. As a jazz musician Patrick appeared both as leader and

solo pianist in various jazz festivals such as Hong Kong International Jazz Festival, Clockenflap, Beishan International Jazz Festival, Rainbow Bay Festival and Taichung Jazz Festival in which he won first place in the jazz piano competition. He has also shared the stage with top-notch jazz musicians including Eugene Pao, Ted Lo, Blaine Whittaker, Sylvain Gagnon, Angelita Li, Japanese trombonist Yoichi Murata, Columbian percussionist Alonso Gonzalez, and more. Besides solo and small ensemble settings, Patrick is also experienced in big band jazz, and currently directs, composes and arranges for the jazz orchestra ‘The 5422 Collective’ and has performed at the International Jazz Day celebrations, the Hong Kong Summer Jazz Festival and the Hong Kong People’s Fringe Arts Festival. He also played in the opening ceremony at the Hong Kong stop of the international street piano tour ‘Play Me, I’m Yours’, in which he was one of the two Hong Kong jazz representatives and played in a 16-piano composition commissioned for the event. His big band compositions and arrangements have received performances in Taiwan by the Kos Swing Big Band under the direction of Grammy nominee Dr. Gene Aiken.

Patrick has also excelled in pop/commercial music. He has performing, composing, arranging, and recording collaborations with numerous artists such as RubberBand, George Lam, Mark Lui, Eason Chan, Kay Tse, Leo Ku, Justin Lo, Janice Vidal, Jan Lamb, and Jason Chan among others. With his work as a co-producer for RubberBand’s album ‘Easy’, he won Commercial Radio 2 903’s prestigious ‘Best Album Of The Year’ award. As a writer, Patrick scored for feature films such as ‘That’s Not What I Expected’, ‘The Bounty’, and has also published compositions and arrangements for McDonald’s, Radio & Television Hong Kong, The Hong Kong Dance Company, and the Hong Kong Children’s Choir. Patrick is currently a guest lecturer for The Education University of Hong Kong, teaching jazz piano and arranging.

In 2016, Patrick’s jazz quartet ‘In One Stroke’ entered the semi-finals of the Bucharest International Jazz Competition and made their European debut in Romania.

雷柏熹

雷柏熹於美國 Berklee College of Music 畢業後回港發展其音樂事業,並 於各方面取得佳績。雷柏熹曾出席多個 音樂節,如香港國際爵士音樂節、 Clockenflap、北山爵士音樂節、彩虹 音樂節及台中爵士音樂節等,並奪得台 中爵士鋼琴比賽首名。他亦曾與多位著

名樂手如包以正、羅尚正、李安琪、Blaine Whittaker、Sylvain Gagnon、日本長號手 村田陽一、哥倫比亞敲擊樂手 Alonso Gonzalez 等同台演出。除小型組合外,雷柏熹亦 多次為爵士大樂團指揮、寫作及伴奏,帶領本地樂團 The 5422 Collective 於世界爵士 日、香港國際爵士音樂節及香港藝穗民化節等場合演出。在全球多個城巿巡迴的街頭鋼 琴活動’Play Me, I’m Yours’中,獲邀於香港站的揭幕演出,擔任爵士樂界代表於元創坊 參與十六部鋼琴聯彈演奏。他又曾赴台南參與「爵士基因」音樂營於鋼琴大師班授課, 並與 KoSwing 及格林美獎提名人 Dr. Gene Aitken 演出。

流行音樂界別之中,他曾為 RubberBand、林子祥、雷頌德、陳奕迅、謝安琪、古巨基、 許志安、側田、衞蘭、林海峰及陳栢宇等作現場演出、作曲、編曲及錄音。當中,為 RubberBand 擔任監製之一的大碟《Easy》,獲商業二台叱咤 903 頒發年度「至尊大碟」 獎項。作曲及配樂方面,雷柏熹曾為電影《懸紅》、《喜歡你》、麥當勞、香港電台、香 港舞蹈團、香港兒童合唱團等執筆。 雷柏熹現為香港教育大學爵士鋼琴及編曲課之客 席講師。

二〇一六年,雷柏熹的爵士四重奏’In One Stroke’晉身布加拉斯特國際爵士樂比賽之準 決賽,遠赴羅馬尼亞參賽及演出。
